Colombian Arepas

Traditional white corn or sweet corn served with butter and white cheese or sauteed tomatoes, green onion (hogao), and pulled beef Colombian style.

Colombian arepas are a prominent and very traditional part of Colombian cuisine which are eaten by Colombians almost daily. They can be served as side dishes in meals, such as the Bandeja Paisa, used for sandwiches, or eaten on their own as a snack.

Colombian arepas are round patties made of cornmeal that can be baked, grilled, or fried. When eaten as a snack, they are usually served with accompaniments like meat, cheese, and avocado.

Arepas have an extensive history in Colombia which goes back 3000 years to the first recorded date that corn was known to have been used in Colombia. Archeologists have found the clay slabs originally used to cook arepas in both Colombia and Venezuela. Historians believe that arepas have remained almost entirely unchanged since their beginning, making it one of the few pre-contact Colombian traditions that survive today.
